Small
Business Economics and Management (SBE&M) is a new speciality dedicated to students of

Faculty
of Management and Economics at Gdańsk University of Technology, to
international students of Socrates Program
and to other students from nonEU members. One of the distinctive
features of this speciality is its international character. All
lectures are held in English. Polish students are given a unique
opportunity to make a personal experience of studying with students
from countries such as Germany (Stralsund, Bamberg), France, Italy,
Spain and other EU members. Learning in such cross-culture group is a
great advantage. It allows students to make contacts beneficial for
their future careers. It also creates a possibility of gaining
practical
knowledge of managing a small firm in fast changing environment.
Special emphasis is placed on economics and management of small and
medium enterprises (SMEs) operating within EU structures. Moreover,
students of
SBE&M who apply for Socrates scholarships for
studies in Germany, France or Denmark can count on special privileges.
Acquisition of professional English vocabulary and
Business English is an another advantage of this speciality.
Small and medium-sized firms represent over 90 % of enterprises in most
countries, worldwide. That is why, the objective of
Small Business Economics and Management studies
is to provide comprehensive knowledge about concerns and challenges
faced by companies in this sector in the new century characterized by
significant globalization of the economy. Research problems covered by
this speciality are as following: european economics integration,
macroeconomics of SMEs, internationalization of SMEs, small business
operation and management, evaluation of financial situation of SMEs,
prediction of business bankruptcy, symptoms of financial crisis in
SMEs, statistics, econometrics, entrepreneurship, prediction of
exchange rates, methods of hedging against appreciation or depreciation
of exchange rates, methods of small business financing, international
finance, franchising, network economies, process of convergence in the
EU, business plan and business ethics.
The course is held by experienced academic staff of the Department of
Economics and Business Management, Philosophy Sciences, Social Sciences
and Knowledge Management. The graduates of this speciality receive the
background for holding managerial positions in SMEs.
